April Zay
April Zay is a multidisciplinary artist whose work spans traditional illustration, and design to more expressive fine art forms. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Illustration from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City, where she developed a strong foundation in visual storytelling and craftsmanship. After graduating, April honed her creative skills in corporate graphic design, packaging design, and photography before founding her own business, Hummingbird Arts Studio, in 2006.
Through her studio, April teaches art workshops throughout NJ and PA. In addition she creates commissioned works, specializing in oil-painted pet portraits and intricate paper arts. Her collaborative spirit led to the launch of Poetry Takes Flight in 2013, a partnership with a poet-lyricist that resulted in many works, both small and large-scale pieces merging word and image, as well as creating cover artwork for many publications. In 2021, April became a founding member of The Princeton Makes Artist Co-operative, an artist-run space dedicated to fostering community and creative growth.
April’s practice continues to evolve, moving from intimate commissions to expansive works that explore form, movement, and inspiration through paper, inks, and natural materials. Her current body of work, on display at Princeton Makes, reflects a deep commitment to experimentation, sustainability, and the poetic interplay between material and meaning.
